Monogram Block Letters

What's in a name?
My name in block letters...

As we were done making all the cuts for our bed we were making (future post to come)
I had an idea to use the scraps for a project. I grabbed a 1 x 4 board and made six 4" length cuts with the miter saw.

Then on to the orbital sander to round out all the edges

My stack of sanded blocks. . .

First I used a vinegar and steel wool mixture I had to age and color the wood.
Just mix the two ingredients into a glass jar and let it sit for a few hours. This particular one was made months ago and I had no idea what that was going to mean!
I do think that the type and age of wood plays a part into how it reacts and what color you get.

Brush on this mixture with an old paintbrush or foam brush.

Watch the wood turn color. . .

Brush on the other side. It doesn't have to be even/perfect.

Then get a cup of water along with a light colored paint. I used Valspar's Careless Whisper.
Yes, I did choose the color by it's name. Yes, I have used this sample in many projects. I don't mind buying samples because I use them for so many projects!

Dip your brush in some paint and then the water and randomly brush on the paint on the blocks allowing some of the wood to show through.

Now comes stenciling. . . UGH . . . stenciling is the WORST!
I'm terrible at it! I tried using just a bit of paint but it always bled past the lines looking ugly. I finally used a felt tip marker to trace the outline, then filled it in with paint. Since I wasn't trying so hard to fill out the edges it wasn't hardly bleeding anymore!

Some of the painter's tape pulled up some of the paint but that just added to the rustic look.

Then I grabbed some upholstery nails and put one on each corner of the block.

I actually had every single thing for this project and I didn't have to buy anything new to do it! It doesn't mean it's free - but it sure felt like it! :)

Here's the finished product!

Hope you enjoyed this new idea! If you're interested in one for yourself let me know and I'd be happy to make you one! It's $3 a block/letter. I can change colors and sizes as requested.
